Optometric interns under the close supervision of licensed optometrists who are members of the clinical faculty of the School provide comprehensive primary eye care services as well as specialized services in contact lenses, electrodiagnosis, pediatrics, low vision, binocular vision and prosthetic eyes. We also provide optical dispensing services (eyeglasses, contact lenses and low vision devices). Comprehensive Evaluation Information:
Our routine comprehensive evaluations take about 2 hours. Our evaluations are typically longer than traditional evaluations due to the extensive battery of tests we perform. As part of the comprehensive evaluation the doctor we will assess your ocular health and determine the final spectacle or contact lens prescription adequate for you.
Things to remember before your evaluation:
- Try to come at least 15 minutes early to complete the paperwork.
- Bring your current prescription (spectacles or contact lenses) with you to the evaluation.
- If you have vision insurance coverage, please bring your insurance card.
In order to perform a complete evaluation of the eye health, eye drops will be used to dilate your pupils. This will allow a better view of the interior of the eye to diagnose conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, and hypertensive retinopathy. Since your eyes will be more sensitive to light for a few hours, we will provide disposable sunglasses at the end of your appointment. Your near vision may be blurred for a few hours after the dilating drops are used. We strongly recommend that you bring a friend or family member to drive you home after your evaluation.
Specialized testing used in diagnosis and management
We provide specialized testing such as retinal and anterior segment photography, computerized visual field analysis, retinal and optic nerve tomography, and optical coherence tomography. We also consult and/or refer with other health care providers as needed.
Low Vision Evaluation:
Some ocular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy can significantly impair the vision of many patients. Most patients can improve their visual function and quality of life through the use of visual enhancement devices. In our Low Vision Clinic we provide a specialized evaluation to determine how patients can achieve better vision. Very often daily activities like reading, walking, playing cards, watching TV, and recognizing faces can be improved through the of use magnifiers, telescopes, prisms and electronic devices.
This clinic is the only one available in Puerto Rico that provides evaluations of the ocular health by measuring electrical potentials. These tests are very helpful in the diagnosis of diseases of the light detecting portion of the eye (retina) or the ocular pathways.
- Electroretinography (ERG) is a test to detect abnormal function of the retina. Specifically, in this test, the light-sensitive cells of the eye, the rods and cones, and their connecting ganglion cells in the retina are assessed. It is useful in evaluating both inherited (hereditary) and acquired disorders of the retina. An ERG can also be useful in determining if retinal surgery or other types of ocular surgery such as cataract extraction might be useful.
- Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) evaluates the retina and optic nerve by measuring the electrical potential resulting from a visual stimulus.
- Electrooculography (EOG) evaluates a layer of the retina (retinal pigment epithelium) by measuring changes in the electrical potential between the front and back of the eye in response to dark and light. It can be useful in the diagnosis of certain ocular diseases.
Binocular Vision Clinic & Visual Therapy Clinic:
The Binocular Vision offers specialized eye and vision care, including:
- Management and treatment of eye alignment problems such as strabismus (squint) or other eye coordination problems that may cause loss of stereopsis (depth perception), diplopia (double vision), amblyopia (lazy eye) and other visual impairments
- Management of problems of accommodation (eye focusing system) that can lead to symptoms such as headaches or eyestrain.
Many patients are placed in vision therapy, a personalized program designed to train the neuromuscular system of the eyes through the use of prisms, eye patches, bifocal lenses and visual exercises. Patient will be followed through additional visits until the dysfunction is resolved or stabilized.
Visual Perceptual Evaluation:
Evaluation and treatment of visual information processing and perceptual skills critical to reading and learning. This is a lengthy evaluation that results in specific diagnoses and recommendations for therapy.
Specialty Pediatric Optometry Service:
Offers complete optometric care to children 4 years of age and younger including infants. We also offer visual examinations of children of special populations such as Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Autism among others.
Prosthetic Eye Clinic:
Eye trauma, tumors and certain diseases may require enucleation (removal) of an eye. Nowadays people can improve their appearance using prosthetic (artificial) eyes. Our professionals in prosthetic eyes can match the color and eye socket shape, resulting in a natural look.
Contact Lenses Services:
We offer specialized testing and fitting of all types of contact lenses including rigid gas permeable, soft, daily wear, extended wear, bifocal, scleral lenses, and disposable lenses. We also offer orthokeratology services for patients who want to improve their vision by reshaping the shape of their cornea (front of the eye).
InfantSEE® School Screenings and Community Services
InfantSEE® is "a public health program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care. Under this program member optometrists will provide a comprehensive visual assessment of infants within 6 months to 1 year of life as a no-cost public health service." Inter American University School of Optometry (IAUPR) is a participant in the InfantSEE® program.
Our community clinical program provides free vision screening services to the community visiting health fairs, schools, and nursing home among others. These services promote early detection and prevention of ocular diseases.
The goal of our eye care community program is to provide ocular and visual care to those for whom, geographic, or physical barriers prevent access to such services. Optometric faculty and interns will visit patients that are bedridden at home or in nursing homes and evaluate them in nontraditional scenarios. Services are provided at patient’s home including frame selection for spectacle prescriptions.
Spectacle Frames and Lenses Each one of the Inter American Eye Institute satellite clinics offer a large selection of eyewear, including exclusive frame lines and up-to-date styles for all age groups. We offer progressive lenses (no-line bifocals). Our personnel are trained to select frames and lenses that fit each patient's individual needs. A wide selection of sunglasses, sun clips, sports eyewear, and safety eyewear is available.
We welcome optical prescriptions from doctors outside of our clinics. We also provide spectacle adjustments and repairs. Our eyewear dispensaries are open during office hours. No appointments are necessary, but please check in at the front desk when you arrive.
